Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
