Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
