Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the board had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Surprising Comeback

A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
