Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
